Auld Lang Syne

Well, a very happy New Year to everyone. Laura and I certainly had a jam packed holiday as we reflected on the past year, made those ever so nasty resolutions, ate enough food to feed a small Mongolian tribe, and spent some quality time with family and friends ushering in the future. Where are the flying cars? Anyone? I though we’d have those by now or at least heated toilet seats. But the New Year was awesome and we had a wonderful day leading up the nanosecond conversion of the past year into the new year.

New Years Eve day started off in the morning with a yummy bowl of corn-pops for breakfast to jump start the metabolism to hopefully survive the grueling length of awakeness that was coming upon us.  The morning was actually pretty chill for the most part and pretty soon began to blend with the afternoon.  Laura made a wonderful caramel cake for some of our friends, the Ashley’s, who were coming in that evening for dinner.  We also ran a few errands.  Now, one thing I love about the New Year is ringing it in with a healthy dose of black powder.  So part of my day was preparing for a small ground based fireworks show for the family, friends and neighbors in the cul-de-sac. (Laura and I made a stop at a fireworks place off of I-20 in Alabama on our way from Christmas with my family).  Here’s some pictures of what we obtained for the evenings festivities.

These fireworks were smaller compared to what I like to use for the 4th of July but that was mainly because were in a cul-de-sac in the middle of Marietta, Ga but they still ended up being very fun.  The proximity of houses is why I decided to move to more of a ground based show.  And since there was a lot of family and friends, I kept it as a tradition hand light show – meaning there was no time fuse and set up involved.  That way we could just kind of enjoy each firework in it’s glory.  I also thought I’d take a minute and demonstrate some of the preparation.  Typically, I always take off the paper and plastic wrapping cover to expose the fuse and firework.  This helps with clean-up and exposes the insides to make sure everything looks ok.  Safety first! So here is a brief video of some basic preparation and I use this same technique preparing for bigger shows as well.

So after all the preparation was done, we began making a bunch of awesomely yummy hors-devours for the evening festivities, after all, once you have a dinner of amazing chicken tacos with beans and salsa at 7 or so you need to have munchies to keep you going till midnight.  So we made sausage balls, chips and queso, crackers and crab dip, boiled shrimp and cocktail sauce, and fresh veggie trays.  Later in the evening our friends came over and the rest of family came over and we had our wonderful chicken tacos and snacked on our culinary creations.  In between snacking we all went outside  to light off the previously prepared fireworks. After the fireworks, we came back in and talked and played games on the Wii as we counted down the minutes.  We opened the Champagne bottle with a resounding “pop” from the cork, poured some glasses to toast together, and before we knew it we were counting down 10-9-8-7-6-5-4-3-2-1…Happy New Year!  And just like that 2010 was already in the past.  Like I said before, it was a great evening and Laura and I are excited for what this year will bring!  Before I sign off, take some time to enjoy some of the pictures of us ringing in the New Year!
