My Musical Musings During July

So, in the midst of all of our craziness, I still had some down time to relax with my favorite hobby, which is music. You might remember that Laura recorded me awhile back playing an original composition on the piano. I haven’t fully recorded that one yet digitally, but it did inspire me to dig deep into garageband and explore it’s recording capabilities.

Now, I for one love me some old hymns, so what better first recording project than to arrange and old hymn right? So I settled on one of my favorites, “How deep the Father’s Love for Us.” Now the hard part became creating an unique and original arrangement. This took some time, many many hours actually. But finally I had written an arrangement that I was content with. In the meantime of writing the arrangement for the song, I began to explore garageband and all of it’s recording capabilities. I did this by just creating short projects and tampering with all of the almost infinite editing possibilities that are presented in the program. After, semi-mastering the program it was time to record the arrangement. Fortunately, I already had a very nice keyboard with MIDI to USB connector cables which is pretty much essential. I just needed a block of time to work on it.
That block of time when Laura was in Marietta for her marketing conference. I actually had several blocks of time to just set everything up in the guest room and go to town recording, deleting, re-recording, editing, and so on. Finally, after about a week later, all the tracks had been laid down and the editing complete. I’m very pleased with how it turned out, especially for my first attempt at a full song with multiple tracks. So let me know what you think! The lyrics of the hymn are below because the recording is only instrumental. And of course the track does not contain every verse to avoid redundancy, but you get the idea.  Enjoy and feedback is always appreciated, especially since I’m considering making some more for like a self made mini-album!

How deep the Father’s love for us,
How vast beyond all measure
That He should give His only Son
To make a wretch His treasure
How great the pain of searing loss,
The Father turns His face away
As wounds which mar the chosen One,
Bring many sons to glory
Behold the Man upon a cross,
My sin upon His shoulders
Ashamed I hear my mocking voice,
Call out among the scoffers
It was my sin that held Him there
Until it was accomplished
His dying breath has brought me life
I know that it is finished
I will not boast in anything
No gifts, no power, no wisdom
But I will boast in Jesus Christ
His death and resurrection
Why should I gain from His reward?
I cannot give an answer
But this I know with all my heart
His wounds have paid my ransom
